The corner of Mulberry Street and Hester Street has been under construction for almost a year. It probably has brought to many tourist and pedestrians inconvenience because the construction work has used up half of the street. Whoever walks on the construction side of the block will need to cross to the other side of the block.

There is also a store named Lulu Castagnette just closed down because of relocation. For those who are interested to open a store and put some more business on Mulberry Street can go and visit.

There is also a youth center up a block from Lulu Castagnette. It is a small gym youth center. There are basketball games held at center at certain times. It is used for a after school program for a near by school.

Many Stores of Mulberry

Besides Little Italy, there are many stores on Mulberry Street that worth going to. On the corner of Kenmare and Mulberry Street locates the Paul Frank Store. It is the only Paul Frank store that only sells Paul Frank’s products. This is also the only Paul Frank Store in New York City.

There is also a very famous shoe store named John Fluevog, it is also the only store in New York City. Besides shoe store, there are other small clothing stores for tourist and people to visit. For example, Chip and Pepper clothing store also has only one location in New York City. There is also a convenient Met Supermarket on Mulberry Street, between Prince and Spring Street.

Little Italy

Summer is coming, that means Little Italy on Mulberry Street is open for anyone to walk on. Every summer, the road is closed from Broome Street to Canal Street. Many Italian restaurants will bring their tables and chairs out to the street so people can sit outside of the restaurant to eat. Other souvenirs stores also have a table of souvenirs stuff for tourist to see and for them to buy.

The streets are open every Friday starting at 4:00 P.M. till Sunday 12:A.M. It is usually more crowded at nights because there are bars, restaurants and jewelry shops for people to visit. There is also many garland decorations along the street, using poles to hold it up.

Mulberry Street’s Little Italy is a very common tourist place for few. There are many tourists throughout the year that comes to walk down Little Italy when they’re in New York City.

Community News

There’s a Chinese proverb saying “one generation plants the trees; another gets the shade.” This is what a community is about. Mulberry street’s residents still consist of many people that lived here twenty years ago. People from one building will know other people from other buildings. There is also a Spring Street Park, created by the Judson Health Center, for residents who live around Mulberry Street to relax and spend their time, especially during the summer.

Besides the park, there are few laundromat where the residents get to meet other people. During the weekends, the parents will do their laundry and will leave their kids to one parent and take care of the children. The parents will come together and talk about their children’s school work. People who live near the Mulberry Street area knows each other, or most of the people. They usually come around on the weekends.

There is also a Saint Gennaro Festival during September. The festival is two week long and it extend from canal street to the end of Mulberry Street. Alot of people from different places come during that time to walk down Mulberry Street. There are many stands of food and games where people can enjoy themselves.

About My Community

Abraham Lincoln once said, “The strongest bond of human sympathy outside the family relation should be one uniting working people of all nations and tongues and kindreds.” Abraham Lincoln’s quote mean the first strongest sympathy is within the family and the second strongest sympathy is when people unite together and fight for their interest and beliefs. Associating one with a community is a way to unite as a whole and discuss each other’s interest and share their concerns.

Mulberry Street has a total of eleven blocks. There is a Italian Neighborhood, “The Little Italy,” located at Mulberry Street, intersecting from Broome Street to Canal Street. There are many Italian restaurants between those blocks. There is a Columbus Park located at Mulberry Street intersecting Worth Street. Those are the major places located on Mulberry Street. Other neighborhood and area around Mulberry Street is Broadway and Chinatown. It is around a 5-8 minute walk from Mulberry Street to Broadway or Chinatown. There is also a Met supermarket located on Mulberry Street.
